It happened because eating is one of the few daily activities flexible enough to be squeezed into whatever gap was left.

This course is built for the specific experience of not remembering a meal five minutes after finishing it. Not because anything is wrong with the person eating it, but because the conditions around that meal were never designed for tasting anything. Published gastroenterology research has looked, in various forms, at what happens mechanically when a person eats while their attention is elsewhere. Chewing cycles tend to shorten when a screen is involved. Bites arrive faster and closer together. Some studies point to a delay in recognizing the hormonal signals, like those tied to gastric stretch and satiety, that would otherwise say a meal has done its job.

None of this means distracted eating causes harm on its own. It means the body's signaling system is built to work with attention, not around it. A faster, less-chewed, less-noticed meal asks the digestive system to do more work with less preparation, and it asks the brain to guess about fullness instead of reading it.

This course does not diagnose or treat digestive conditions. It explains, in plain terms, what the research describes, so the mechanics of a distracted meal stop being invisible.

Course structure, in detail

Six parts, expanded

Before anything changes, week one asks participants to simply record what a normal screen-meal looks like, without trying to fix it yet. Where it happens. What's playing. How long it takes. This is observational, not corrective, and it's usually the first time anyone has looked at their own eating pattern with any real attention.

Week two shifts from noticing to adjusting the physical setup around meals: where the phone sits, what's visible from the eating spot, the distance between plate and screen. The premise is straightforward. Environment cues are stronger and more consistent than intention, so the environment is what gets restructured first.

This week covers eating pace as a designable variable rather than a personality trait, plus what research on plate size and portion perception has and hasn't shown consistently. It also introduces the eight-minute lunch break restructuring exercise used throughout the rest of the course.

The final week focuses on what tends to erode a new eating pattern within a few weeks of a course ending, and how to build cues into an existing kitchen, desk, or commute instead of relying on a new tool or reminder system. The goal is a habit that survives a busy week, not a perfect one.

Each weekday includes a short exercise, usually between two and six minutes, tied to that week's theme. These are meant to fit inside an existing meal rather than add a new obligation to the day. Examples include a single distraction-free bite, a plate-distance check, or a one-line note about hunger before eating.

One live session runs each week, roughly sixty to seventy-five minutes, in a small group format with room for questions and shared observations. Sessions are recorded for anyone whose schedule doesn't line up that week, though the live discussion itself is where most participants say the material starts to feel concrete.

Environment over discipline

Why eating slowly isn't a willpower problem

Telling someone to eat more slowly rarely works, and it's not because they lack discipline. It's because the environment they're eating in was built for speed. A laptop open at eye level, a notification every few minutes, a chair angled toward a screen instead of a window: none of these ask for a slow meal. They ask for an efficient one.

Behavioral research on habit formation generally supports the idea that environment cues shape behavior more reliably than intention does, especially under stress or time pressure, which describes most weekday lunches fairly accurately. Removing a single cue, like moving the phone to another room, tends to outperform a much stronger internal reminder to "just slow down."

No meditation app required

Rebuilding a lunch break in eight minutes

Most workday lunches don't have room for a thirty-minute ritual. This course doesn't ask for one. The eight-minute reset taught in week three is built for an actual lunch break: short, interruptible, and doable at a desk if a different room isn't available.

  1. Minute 0-1: Close the tab, screen, or notification source. Not silence it. Close it.
  2. Minute 1-2: Move, even three feet. A different chair, a windowsill, a step outside.
  3. Minute 2-3: Set a visual boundary around the food, a plate edge, a napkin, a tray.
  4. Minute 3-7: Eat with the utensil set down between bites at least twice.
  5. Minute 7-8: One breath before returning to the screen, nothing more elaborate than that.

This sequence is taught, practiced live, and adjusted based on what participants report back. It is not a meditation technique and doesn't require any app, timer, or subscription beyond the course itself.

Portion perception research

What changing the plate does to what we think we're eating

A well-known line of research has examined how the size of a plate, bowl, or glass changes a person's perception of how much food is on it, and how much they end up serving or consuming as a result. The general finding across much of this literature is that portion perception is relative rather than absolute: the same amount of food looks larger on a smaller plate and smaller on a larger one.

It's worth noting, in the interest of accuracy, that some of the specific studies in this area have had mixed results under replication, and researchers continue to debate how strong or consistent the plate-size effect really is across different settings. This course treats portion perception as one variable worth understanding, not a fixed rule to apply blindly.

Week three walks through what this research does and doesn't support, and how plate size interacts with pace, distraction, and hunger cues rather than acting alone.

Where the live sessions reach

Session coverage across US time zones

Beyuli is delivered fully online, with live sessions scheduled to accommodate the four continental US time zones. Recordings are made available within a day for anyone whose week doesn't line up with the live time.

Eastern

Live sessions typically run early evening, after most workdays end, with a shorter gap before the recording is posted for early risers the next day.

Central

The most commonly attended live slot, positioned to overlap comfortably with both Eastern and Mountain participants' evenings.

Mountain & Pacific

An alternate weekly time is offered where enrollment supports it, otherwise the recording and written summary arrive the same evening.

Asynchronous

Everyone receives the daily micro-exercises, written materials, and session recordings regardless of time zone or attendance.
